Aligners

Aligners are a more modern alternative to traditional braces for adults. They correct tooth and jaw issues the same way that braces do, but work without metal wires and brackets and are virtually invisible. You can also remove them for eating, brushing, and flossing, making them more convenient than braces..

Braces

Braces are the most well-known orthodontic appliance, and are used to straighten teeth and correct underbites, overbites and other issues in the jaw. They generally consist of fixed bands around the teeth, with brackets bonded to the front of each tooth. Over time, they slowly correct the position of the teeth and move them into the proper position.

Fixed Space Maintainers

Space maintainers are used when a baby tooth is lost before a permanent tooth is ready to grow into the space. In this procedure, a band is attached to the adjacent tooth, and a wire is placed between the empty space to keep the opening wide enough for the tooth to grow in.

Jaw Repositioning Appliances

These are worn on the jaw to help train it to close in a better position. Also called “splints,” they are used to treat conditions like TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder).

Lip and Cheek Bumpers

The muscles in your lips and cheeks can put pressure on your teeth. Bumpers are designed to ease this pressure by keeping your lips and cheeks away from them, keeping them healthy.

Palatal Expander

A palatal expander is a plate made of hard plastic that widens the arch of your upper jaw. It fits over the roof of your mouth, causing the palatal area to open up and increase in width.

Removable Space Maintainers

Removable space maintainers are made with an acrylic base that fits over your jaw. They have “branches” made of wire or plastic that fit between the spaces of specific teeth and help keep them open.

Special Fixed Appliances

Special fixed appliances are typically used to control harmful habits like tongue thrusting or thumb sucking. They are attached to the teeth by bands, but because they are generally very uncomfortable when eating, they are typically used as a last resort.
